Trial for Penticton quadruple murder moved to Kelowna

Mass shooting trial moved

The trial for last year’s quadruple murder in Penticton will be heard in Kelowna.

Justice Alison Beames accepted an application Thursday to have John Brittain’s trial moved from Penticton to the more modern Kelowna courthouse.

The details of Thursday’s court application are covered under a publication ban.

Brittain is accused in the shooting deaths of Susan and Barry Wonch, Rudi Winter and Darlene Knippelberg on April 15, 2019. Police say he turned himself in after the killings.

The setting of a trial date has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, in addition to two other pre-trial matters, which are also under publication ban, that need to be settled first.

While Brittain has elected for a jury trial, there have been previous discussions about shifting to a judge-alone trial.
