Osoyoos RCMP not impressed by seasonal worker prank

COVID-19 prank riles RCMP

RCMP in Osoyoos have launched an investigation into social media claims that people will be canvassing door-to-door asking households to take in seasonal workers, that turned out to be a prank.

Police say they heard from residents about the online posts and were concerned, especially given the COVID-19 crisis and social distancing recommendations.

Osoyoos RCMP has initiated a criminal investigation into this matter. Police have discussed their concerns with the individual they believe to be responsible for creating the online post, who reports that it was intended to be an April Fools prank.

Investigators have urged the individual to remove their online post, and ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or criminal activity to police.

The Town of Osoyoos has also had to deal with fraudsters this week, receiving reports of people calling Osoyoos businesses, pretending to be government employees and ordering the businesses to close due to COVID-19.

The town says they will not be contacting any businesses by phone. Any contact will be made in person.
