Foundry Penticton offering programs for parents

Foundry supports parents

Penticton’s Foundry youth resource centre is launching a series of workshops for adult family members to provide helpful information from professionals.

“As parents who are supporting a young person with mental health, substance use or affirming their gender identity and sexuality, we wanted to reach out to other parents in the community to share helpful information and build circles of support,” said Terri McKinlay a parent with the caregivers advisory team.

“It was helpful for me to meet other parents who were walking the same journey, and though every family’s story is unique, there are common emotions and experiences.”

Another parent with the caregivers advisory team, Alison Gear added “It’s comforting to know you are not alone. It can help to talk with someone who has shared experiences. The parents connected with Foundry wanted to do more to help other parents in the community. We want to reduce fears and isolation, and offer connections, support and hope.”

Foundry will host two workshops on Feb. 29 — a 10 a.m. session on supporting youth living with anxiety or depression and a 11:10 a.m. session on youth substance abuse.  After each session, there will be time for parents and caregivers to meet with other adult family members with shared experiences. Caregivers can register for one or both sessions.

“If the workshop is full, we still encourage people to register so we can be sure to invite and include folks in our future activities,” said McKinlay. “It will also help our Caregivers Team know if we are on the right track with topics and themes that people are seeking resources.”

The caregivers advisory invites parents out to a screening of Out In Schools on March 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cleland Theatre. It is an award-winning education program that uses film and group discussion to provoke understanding about sexual orientation, gender identity, and broader social justice issues.

Foundry Penticton is offering the screening in partnership with South Okanagan Similkameen PRIDE and School District 67.
