Fire sparked in Okanagan Correctional Centre cell

Fire in OCC prison cell

Fire crews were called to the Okanagan Correctional Centre in the early hours of Wednesday morning to deal with flames inside a prison cell.

Oliver Fire Department spokesperson Rob Graham said six firefighters responded to smouldering materials inside one of the cells. All prisoners had been relocated to allow the crews safe access.

"Once our crews arrived to the cell where the fire had been they knocked down any still smouldering materials and removed them from the cell," Graham said.

The firefighters were escorted to and from cell blocks by corrections officers.

"Each cell block has been outfitted with stand pipes, so the only equipment we required take with us is some lengths of hose and a couple fire extinguishers," Graham explained.

Two pumpers, one duty truck and the fire chief were on scene, and crews were there for approximately 45 minutes.
