Crews back at site of last year's massive rockslide on Hwy 97

Crews back at slide site

UPDATE 2:25 p.m.

The Ministry of Transportation says crews are carrying out “routine maintenance” along Highway 97 north of Summerland at the site of last year’s slide.

“There was a small rockfall last week and our contractor is clearing out the catchment area to free up capacity in the event of future rockfall,” the ministry said.

Drivers can expect minor delays as work is carried out today and tomorrow between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

ORIGINAL 10 a.m.

Work crews are back at the site of the large landslide a year ago that closed Highway 97 for several days.

The right southbound lane of the highway is closed while an excavator works to clear a small slide that recently came down into the ditch.

None of the rocks came down onto the roadway and appear to have been prevented from doing so by rockfall mesh installed at the site last year. It's not clear exactly when the slide came down.

Last year’s slide also took place during a period of extreme cold.

Castanet has reached out to the Ministry of Transportation for comment.
