Local charities and nonprofits mark #GivingTuesday

Giving Tuesday in Penticton

Giving Tuesday, “the global day of generosity,” is being marked today by South Okanagan non-profits.

The day encourages people to support local charities and nonprofits, run food or clothing drives, encourage kindness or help a neighbour.

“Giving Tuesday (#GivingTuesday) is a global generosity movement. Each of us can make a difference in another person’s life by giving to a charitable organization in your community,” said Debbie Scarborough, executive director of the South Okanagan Women in Need Society.

“Large or small, when you add them together, donations are invaluable to SOWINS, helping us to better serve women and children throughout the South Okanagan.”

Mayor John Vassilaki will hold a civic proclamation of Giving Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the outset of today’s city council meeting. Similar proclamations will also take place in Vernon and Kelowna.

Giving Tuesday was launched in the United States in 2012, expanding to Canada the following year.

“Several people and businesses have already come forward with donations of money, gifts, support for food hampers and time,” added Scarborough. “A donation of time can make or break a campaign; we’re thankful for a great team of volunteers that really come through for us.”
