Provincial crews to conduct slash burn northwest of Summerland

Slash burns to emit smoke

The B.C. Wildfire Service is advising Okanagan residents about planned burns to take place northwest of Summerland beginning next week.

Provincial crews will be burning 11 piles of wood debris to help rehabilitate the site of the 2017 Finlay Creek wildfire, and reduce future wildfire risk.

The burns will take place east of Fish Lake Road, about two kilometres west of Mount Acland. They will begin Monday and continue periodically until about the end of April.

Smoke from the burn piles may be visible from nearby communities. Burns will only proceed under conditions that will allow smoke to dissipate. BCWS staff will be on site to monitor.

“The goals of rehabilitating this area are to reduce the threat of erosion and promote the re-establishment of vegetation,” BCWS said. “Removing this woody debris will also reduce the threat of unwanted wildfires in the area.”
