Osoyoos Museum, RDOS commit to 20-year lease

Museum locks in new home

The Osoyoos Museum Society has a new lease on life.

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board has endorsed a 20-year lease for the museum’s new home at 8702 Main Street in Osoyoos.

The RDOS-owned building is currently occupied by Home Hardware, which is moving to a newly constructed building near the airport off Highway 3. The museum takes over the downtown location on January 1 and will start renovations in advance of a summer 2020 open.

“The new museum location will provide Osoyoos with an important historical and cultural amenity that will help educate residents and visitors about the South Okanagan’s heritage,” said RDOS in a news release.

The new lease was formalized on Nov. 9 by RDOS chair Karla Kozakevich, Area “A” director Mark Pendergraft, Town of Osoyoos Mayor Sue McKortoff and along with representatives from the Osoyoos Museum Society. Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson was also in attendance.

The museum has been fundraising for the move and renovations for nearly two years now and received a $250,000 grant for the project earlier this year. The museum was previously located at 19 Park Place.
