First female minor lacrosse season a success in Penticton

Lacrosse for girls a success

The Penticton Minor Lacrosse Association has just completed its inaugural first season with a female field lacrosse program.

Twenty five young women aged seven to 18 years old learned the sport over the course of the past few months.

"It was great, super impressed with the girls, super impressed with the number that came out," said PMLA female program director Penni King.

The season culminated in a trip down to Vancouver to spend two days playing eight exhibition games against teams from all over the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

"We didn't necessarily win but our girls played very well for the majority of them picking their sticks up for the first time at the beginning of September," King said.

She is certain the interest sparked will carry forward.

"I think a lot of them seemed really keen about lacrosse in general, in the spring we'll have our box lacrosse [meaning indoor], I think a lot of the girls that have just started the field will come join us for box," she explained.

The spring box program has been running for three years and will be open to five-year-olds through 16-year-olds.
