Thieves steal six memorial plaques from Naramata Cemetery

Cemetery plaques stolen

Thieves have hit the Naramata Cemetery, stealing several bronze plaques from memorials dating back to 1940.

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen says maintenance crews noticed on Sept. 27 six bronze plaques commemorating eight individuals were removed from their headstones at the cemetery.

The RDOS says it is in the process of contacting the families impacted by the theft.

“The RDOS will help facilitate the replacement of the stolen memorials,” says RDOS chair Karla Kozakevich.

Security has been increased at the Naramata Cemetery. Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to contact the RCMP and quote file number 2019-17293.

Last month, 56 plaques were stolen from a cemetery in West Kelowna, sparking outrage. Cemeteries in Kelowna and Lake Country were hit around the same time. While most of the plaques stolen from the central Okanagan were recovered, suspects have not been publicly identified.
