Penticton man donates kidney after reading article on Castanet

Steps up to donate kidney

Medicine Hat resident John Boksteyn received a kidney transplant from a Penticton man after being on dialysis for three and a half years.

Boksteyn had been suffering from a hereditary disease called polycystic kidney disease, which left him with only five per cent kidney function.

Jordan from Penticton, (who wishes not to share his last name) came across a previous article on Castanet about Boksteyn's family desperately looking for potential donors.

"I saw the article on Castanet, and it jumped out at me ... I just felt like that's what God wanted me to do," said Jordan.

"I'm kind of impulsive, so it was totally random and unplanned. I volunteered and I didn't really know what I was getting myself into."

Jordan passed all the screenings, but it took nine months for doctors to confirm he was the right match for Boksteyn.

"I'm eternally grateful to Jordan for what he did," said Boksteyn.

Before the transplant, Boksteyn had to plan to receive dialysis wherever he travelled because he couldn't go more than three days without it, making it near impossible to travel.

The surgery took place on May 8, and the following day, Jordan was encouraged to get up and move around so he walked directly to Boksteyn's room, which was just down the hospital hallway.

The biggest fear Jordan had about the process was the potential that Boksteyn would reject the kidney, meaning the whole nine months would be for nothing.

"Every time I went and saw him, everything was going good," said Jordan.

Since meeting, the two of them stay in contact about each others' health, and Boksteyn is now back to work full-time and is focused on spending more time with his wife and dogs.

"I want more people to be inspired to do this kind of thing, I mean John was waiting for a kidney for seven years," said Jordan.

"There's a lot of people dying, there's a lot of people on lists, and so if we can inspire people to step up that would be another bonus."
