Guilty plea in tourist murder

A 27-year-old Oliver man will be sentenced in November for the killing of Belgian tourist Amelie Sakkalis.

Sean McKenzie was arrested earlier this month and charged with first degree murder in the death of Sakkalis. This week, he plead guilty to second degree murder.

Sakkalis's body was discovered in an area north of Boston Bar on Aug. 22, 2018.

Investigators deemed her death a homicide.

“Amelie’s murder was a shock to the community and even for our seasoned investigators,” says Sgt. Frank Jang of IHIT.  “A guilty plea speaks to the hard work and dedication of our investigators, as well it is important to acknowledge the support from our policing partners and the partnership with Crown counsel.”

Sakkalis was travelling through Canada at the time of her murder.

It is believed she was hitchhiking from the Penticton area looking to get to Vancouver on the day she was killed.
