Carjacker still at large

UPDATE: 1:40 p.m.

RCMP have confirmed that the stolen grey 2017 Toyota Rav4 taken at gun point in Penticton Thursday was recovered. 

"The vehicle was discovered abandoned in the vicinity of Eckhardt Avenue West and Comox Street," reads a press release from Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey, confirming earlier Castanet reports.

He says the criminal investigation remains "very active" and police are continuing efforts to identify the subject. 

Forensic specialists with the RCMP Forensic Identification Section will be conducting a full examination of the vehicle, searching for physical evidence. 

Police are reminding the public that the suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 20-30 years of age, standing approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, with curly dark brown hair, last seen wearing a black leather jacket and black jeans.

Anyone with any information, including video surveillance or dash camera footage is urged to contact the Penticton RCMP

UPDATE 11:15 a.m.

Police have recovered what is believed to be the vehicle involved in a carjacking on Eastside Road in Penticton Thursday afternoon.

A grey Toyota Rav 4 matching the description of one being sought by RCMP was towed out of the parking lot of the Penticton Golf and Country Club at around 10:45 a.m.

RCMP officers have canvassed surrounding businesses, appealing for information and video surveillance footage. The SUV appeared to be abandoned at the parking lot with no suspect in the area.

RCMP have not commented on the situation since Thursday afternoon, when it confirmed the carjacking had occurred around 3 p.m. 

A man standing by a crashed motorcycle on East Side Road flagged down a passing driver. When the driver pulled over to assist, the man pointed a firearm at the driver and told them to exit the vehicle, which they did.

The suspect then drove the a Rav4 toward Penticton. The unharmed victim called 911.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 20-30 years of age, approximately 5 foot 7 inches tall with dark brown curly hair, a black leather jacket and black jeans.

Castanet has reached out to multiple RCMP personnel in an effort to gain an update on the armed carjacking fugitive who went on the run from Eastside Road Thursday.

Several requests for information both on Thursday evening and Friday morning have not yet received a response. 

The Penticton Regional Hospital was on lockdown overnight as a precaution due to the potentially armed man on the loose, but the hospital confirmed to Castanet Friday morning that the lockdown was lifted sometime after 7 a.m.
