The YMCA says it has made some progress on staffing its new daycare centre at Queen’s Park, meaning a batch of new spots have opened up in a community struggling with a childcare shortage.
A dozen spots are now open in the 3-5 age group at Queen's Park.
“It came down to finding child care providers, staff,” said YMCA of Okanagan communications manager Cindy Papa. “In the summer we went out and put a real push on hiring and we found the necessary staff, so we’ve been able to open up the spaces.”
Castanet News reported this spring on long waitlists at local child care centres. At the time, the YMCA said it had hoped to make more spaces available at the newly-built centre but were limited by challenges recruiting early childhood educators, a problem daycares throughout the region have struggled with.
Papa said Tuesday the Queen’s Park centre has more room for children should the dozen open spaces fill up, at which point they will hire additional staff to open even more slots.
