Layoffs hit Metric Modular

Significant layoffs have hit Metric Modular in Penticton.

Castanet News has learned 49 employees, about one-third of the workforce, were permanently laid off this week at the modular home builder on Government Street.

The plant had just come back online Monday after a two-week shutdown, then layoff notices were handed out on Wednesday. Laid off employees were told it was due to a major dealer that pulled out during the shutdown.

Metric Modular parent company Triple M took over the location from Britco in May 2017, holding a celebration last this spring to mark the 100th home coming off the line since then. The company also constructed the modular social development nearing completion on Winnipeg Street.

The company also has plants in Agassiz and Lethbridge. Metric's Modular's B.C. offices did not return request for comment on Thursday.

Another Penticton modular home manufacturer, Moduline, cut about half its workforce (120 people) back in March.
