Longtime business closing

It's the end of an era at Grant King Men's Wear.

The iconic company has been operating on Penticton's Main Street for around 80 years. Doug and Karen McPherson recently decided to retire after operating the clothing store for 35 years.

"We're very excited to be retiring. We're ecstatic about it. It's obviously a bit of mixed emotions," Doug said.

"It's a family business, so I started working here when I was 14 years old. My dad started working here in 1947, and he bought out Mr. King in about 1972," Doug explained.

Doug's father decided to retire in 1985 and asked his family members whether anyone wanted to take the helm. Doug and Karen had only been married six weeks and were living in Calgary, but they decided to take the leap.

"It was kind of strange moving back home again, and certainly we were nervous about taking over the well-established business that it was, and trying to keep up the reputation that the store had," Doug said.

Fast forward three and a half decades, and it's a sad goodbye.

"We've had a lot of congratulations, and a few 'Now what are we going to do!'" Doug said with a chuckle. "We'll miss the customers. We have such an established client base, and so many awesome people. You see them on a day to day basis, and that will end."

Doug says they do have a final date in mind for the business' closure, but aren't prepared to share it. It will happen sometime in the fall.

The family still owns the space and will be leasing it out to a yet to be decided new tenant. Doug says the memories will be treasured.

"I don't think any particular one moment stands out, but just the day to day and the great people," he explained. "We'll certainly miss them."

As for plans in retirement, the couple has simple goals.

"First thing will be enjoying a Christmas where we don't have to go in and work Boxing Day!"
