In debt caring for animals

Chelsea Powrie

Critteraid Animal Sanctuary can always use donations, but a particularly busy season of young, sick kittens and older cats has them around $10,000 in debt and in desperate need for monetary and cat food donations.

"We are in desperate need of a/d Urgent Care wet food, for some of our smaller kittens that aren't thriving the way that we'd like them to," animal director Jess Byer explained. "As well, we desperately need dry food, grain-free good quality, adult and kitten."

She said one of the sanctuary's key costs is always food, and they are always grateful for donations to help put a dent in the endless need.

They are also facing rising medical costs this time of year, with animals arriving sick or injured and the cost of spaying and neutering the influx.

"We average about $10,000 in debt," Byer said. "The animals deserve the best care we can offer, and we have to go into debt and ask for more help, then we're always going to do so."

Cash donations can be made online here or at the downtown Summerland Critteraid Charity Shoppe, as well as numerous options fo e-transfer or other online options. Donations of cat food can also be made at the shop or at the farm.

Byer would be happy to give details or answer more questions about how you can help, and other locations of where you can drop off food for the Critteraid volunteers to pick it up. She can be reached at 250-488-3226.
