Ironman talks 'completed'

The City of Penticton has completed negotiations to host an Ironman triathlon event, according to a business plan document that will be presented to council on Tuesday.

The document lists ongoing projects and goals from various divisions of the city. It was released late Friday morning, following a city announcement Thursday that a "major sporting event" for 2020 would be announced on July 16 at 5:15 p.m. at Rotary Park.

"Completed negotiations with Ironman to host a five-year signature triathlon event," reads the document intended to update council members projects' progress.

Ironman Triathlon has been teasing the possibility of the event all week on social media, posting blurry photos of what appears to be the South Okanagan area.

The preliminary proposal approved by council in May was for a full-length edition of the race for five years starting in 2020 at an annual cost to taxpayers of $299,000 in cash and $111,000 in-kind support.

The public is welcome at Rotary Park from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rotary Park for a barbecue, live music and beverage garden surrounding the announcement.
