Guilty of assault on VPD

A Penticton man was found guilty by a judge Friday of assaulting a Vancouver police officer back in January 2018.

Paul Benjamin Eddison, 45, was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and uttering threats to a police officer in relation to an incident on Vancouver’s Granville Street on January 15, 2018.

He was acquitted of several other more serious charges including aggravated assault of a police officer and assault causing bodily harm.

The judge’s reasons for decision have not yet been published online. Online court records show the decision came after a multi-day trial last winter and spring.

In the days after the assault, the Vancouver Police Department said patrol officers parked on an early Monday morning were confronted by a large man in an “agitated state.”

In the ensuing struggle, a police officer suffered a compound leg fracture and was forced to undergo surgery. Another officer sustained several sprained fingers. The VPD said it took five officers to subdue Eddison.

Eddison will be back in Vancouver court Sept. 18, 2019 for sentencing.
