Kittens dumped 'like trash'

A woman shopping at the Penticton Superstore this week was dismayed when she found a dumped box in the parking lot that held three young kittens inside.

Critteraid Animal Sanctuary was alerted, and came to the rescue.

"A kind citizen had them in the box in her car, she had gotten them water, just telling them they would be okay," said Jess Byer, animal director. "These calls are not rare and we would like to make it stop."

The three, estimated at 8 weeks old, were luckily found in time and are doing well in foster care until they are old enough for adoption. That's not always the case with abandoned kittens, especially if they are young.

"It’s upsetting as it doesn’t seem to be stopping Every day you hear of a rescue finding kittens and cats left in situations that are not meant for souls, it’s how we treat trash, not living breathing souls," Byer said.

Critteraid has rescued 30 kittens over the past few weeks from the Penticton area alone, all abandoned. Byer said a lack of spaying and neutering compounds the problem.

"The valley needs to be aware it is a problem and overpopulation is a huge issue. Everyone can do their part," she explained. "If you need help please don’t hesitate to call us or one of many great organizations in the valley."
