Skatepark grand open Sat.

The District of Summerland will be holding a grand opening celebration for its new skatepark Saturday, including an appearance by Olympic gold medalist Justin Kripps.

The event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new 10,000-square-foot facility at the corner of Jubilee Road and Rosedale Avenue will result in the closure of Jubilee between Kelly and Rosedale.

The $600,000 project was a collaboration of the municipality, school district, Penny Lane Charity Society and other community contributors.

“This is a fine example of what can be accomplished when community partners work together,” said Mayor Toni Boot. “I thank previous councils for their foresight, especially former Mayor Waterman’s council for committing the gas tax funding to this community project.”

The official ceremony will commence at 11:30 a.m., followed by professional demonstrations, industry booths, food trucks, the RDOS Physical Activity Trailer, a bouncy castle and music.

Justin Kripps, who won gold in two-man bobsled in 2018, was an avid skateboarder in his youth and will be in attendance.
