'Excessive' price at pumps

Okanagan motorists are paying "excessive" prices at the pumps right now.

Gas stations in Penticton are selling gasoline for around $1.42.9 a litre — not far below stations in the Lower Mainland despite 12 cents a litre in extra transit taxes being tacked onto the pumps there.

GasBuddy.com petroleum analyst Dan McTeague said in a tweet Tuesday it’s costing gas stations just $1.24 a litre, taxes in, to buy fuel at wholesale.

“Anything above $1.37 a litre is excessive, unless it’s a remote community,” he tweeted, adding lower wholesale fuel prices have been in place for about 10 days.

In Kelowna and Vernon, gas is selling for around $1.40 a litre. Summerland is the Valley's best bet at the moment, selling for around $1.38 a litre. Kamloops is also at $1.38, according to GasBuddy.

Meanwhile gas is selling for below $1.25 a litre in Merritt, Prince George and Abbotsford.

Just last month, Penticton had the cheapest gas in B.C. at $128.9, at a time when wholesale prices were much higher.
