Students get a boost

Valley First has jumped in to support the Peter Bros. and Castanet fundraiser for the Penticton Secondary School Bursary and Scholarship Foundation with a $2,500 donation.

Prior to his death last week, Penticton philanthropist David Kampe was planning an initiative to raise funds for the foundation, which hands out hundreds of bursaries and grants to local students annually.

“We’ve been in the community of Penticton for over 70 years. Valley First is happy to partner with David Kampe and the Foundation to help our local students of Penticton,” said Valley First president Paulo Araujo prior to Kampe’s death.

“Even myself I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from the foundation when I graduated in '86 from Pen High. That scholarship, it helped me get my education,” Araujo added.

Peter Bros. is aiming to help raise $50,000 for the foundation. Last year, Kampe donated $190,000 to the organization, effectively doubling the amount of support the foundation distributes annually.

In lieu of flowers, the Kampe family is asking the public to support the Foundation with a donation.

Dr. Clayton Selles at the Okanagan Chiropractic Centre attended Princess Margaret Secondary and went onto attend UBCO and Western States University.

“It was really those scholarships right out of high school that helped propel me to my success in school,” he said. “I did well in high school and I did well in university, but you need that little boost in income to help you perform.”

“Every dollar counts and matter, without those scholarships that I had right when I came out of high school… I don’t think I’d be where I’m at today,” Selles added.

While most traditional scholarships focus mainly on marks, the Foundation’s bursaries take a student’s need and character into consideration.

Donations to the Foundation can be made by calling 1-855-904-7033 or by dropping a cheque off made payable to “Penticton Secondary Schools Bursary and Scholarship Foundation” at the Castanet offices in Penticton.

They can also be mailed to the Foundation's address at 158 Eckhardt Avenue East, Penticton B.C., V2A 1Z3. Registered charity number is 890405244RR0001. You can also follow the progress of the fundraising campaign on Facebook.
