Oliver/Osoyoos Search and Rescue are seeking permission from town council to build a new station adjacent to their lot at the Oliver Airport.
The station would "allow for the trucks, trailers and equipment to always be securely stored and loaded and ready to go for emergencies in any weather or temperature," reads an application that council will hear Monday.
OOSAR says having an easily accessible home base for rescue equipment and vehicles that will let them respond to rescue calls faster. They are requesting to expand their current lot adjacent to the airport to allow for a 48 by 60 foot building with three drive through bays and 12-foot overhead doors.
They plan to apply for a funding grant from the Community Gaming Grants Program to fund the project, but need council approval first to slightly expand the area of their lease in order to accommodate the building.
"Oliver/Osoyoos Search and Rescue greatly appreciates the terms of the current land lease, as without this, would not be able to be of service to citizens who require assistance at a dire time," they wrote in their letter to council.
Town of Oliver staff have recommended council support the construction of the new building, and they've provided a letter of support for OOSAR's funding application.
OOSAR currently has 28 members and responds to rescue calls from the U.S. border north to Okanagan Falls.
