Charges in beach attack

One person is in hospital and another in custody following a serious assault at Okanagan Lake Beach in Penticton on Friday.

Police were called to the waterfront along Lakeshore Drive at about 11:30 p.m., arriving to find a male in his 20s suffering from a head injury that had knocked him unconscious. The victim was rushed to Penticton Regional Hospital and eventually transferred to Kelowna where he remains.

Investigators believe the victim was at a small party on the public beach when a suspect assaulted a party goer. The victim and another male tried to intervene and were attacked themselves. One of the interveners suffered a serious head injury as a result.

Thomas Kruger-Allen, 21, is charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault and two counts of common assault. He remains behind bars.

Kruger-Allen has a violent history including a previous similar offence. He pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing bodily harm earlier this year in relation to a jumping outside the Mule Nightclub back in 2017.

“This is an unfortunate event that has impacted many lives, The Penticton RCMP are asking that if anyone witnessed the altercations, and have not spoken to the police, please contact us at 250-492-4300,” said Staff Sergeant Bob Vatamaniuck.

Friends of the victim have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the young man while he recovers in hospital. The GoFundMe page says the victim required emergency brain surgery after the assault and is now in a medically-induced coma.
