Club gets more court time

Summerland council has granted the local pickleball club an additional four hours per week of exclusive use of the Peach Orchard Campground courts, as the club continues to grow.

Council heard Tuesday the Summerland Pickleball Club’s membership has grown substantially in recent years.

The club now has exclusive use of all three courts Monday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon and two courts on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Last year, the club had the rights to the courts on a different staggered schedule. The changes give the club four more hours of court time.

There was some controversy last year when council originally gave the club exclusive times to the courts, with Coun. Doug Holmes stating Tuesday “I probably got more hate mail on this than any other topic in my whole term last year.”

“We really got to make sure we are doing the right thing here and doing right by people,” he said. “People have the right to use public facilities without having to be members of a specific club.”

Parks and recreation manager Lori Mullen said her office only received “a few” complaints about the system last year and she doesn’t expect any issues this year.

“It seemed to work out OK, we didn’t have a lot of concerns come forward, there are a few people, but very small,” she said.

Council unanimously passed the motion, which also bumped up the club's nominal booking fee from $300 to $306.
