Black cats are sweetest

Chelsea Powrie

Critteraid Animal Sanctuary has trouble placing black cats in forever homes, but animal director Jess Byer says they are some of the sweetest types of cats you'll ever find.

Raven is a young female black cat looking for a family right now. Byer said she needs a home without kids, dogs or other cats.

"She is much more of the love-and-pet me type, not a big fan of the pick me up kind of cat," Byer said. "So if anyone's looking for a really wonderful companion that just wants to sit around, be near them, watch TV, read books, Raven's their girl."

She said the shelter gets calls all the time about brightly coloured or patterned cats.

"We find that a lot of black cats get passed by," Byer said. "And they are some of the sweetest, outgoing, wonderful cats."

Tortoiseshell cats are immensely popular, she said, but they have a tendency toward having a bad attitude that Byer can attest to personally. Not so in her experience with black cats.
