Burn pile escapes into grass

South Okanagan firefighters are urging care while carrying out open burning after another escaped fire this weekend.

The Anarchist Mountain Fire Department said on Facebook it responded to its first wildfire of the season Saturday, a 300 by 300 foot blaze that spread from several burn piles.

“Burning is still permitted until April 15th only on days that the venting index allows but it is extremely dry out there,” AMFD said. “If you are burning, please ensure it is monitored closely. You are responsible for any burns you carry out.”

The Oliver Fire Department has issued similar warnings after responding to two grass fires last week.

"It is a little bit strange to have had a couple of grass fires already, considering that two weeks ago we had snow," OFD spokesman Rob Graham told Castanet last week.

The spattering of recent precipitation has been enough to saturate the ground, he said.
