911 calls for playing kids

After several 911 calls to local police by residents upset that kids were enjoying the not-open-yet Summerland skatepark, the municipality opened the park early Tuesday.

Summerland’s chief administrative officer Linda Tynan told council Monday that over spring break, despite the locked gates and “closed” sign, the new skatepark was “been pretty full, with 20-25 kids at any given time.”

Tynan said they were approached by the RCMP — who had been getting 911 calls from residents reporting kids were using the closed park — asking something be done.

The district had been waiting on signage and finishing work to be completed this spring prior to officially opening the new park, but with everyone using it anyway, Tynan said they have erected temporary safety signage and opened the park Tuesday.

“There is quite a bit of work to be done, but it's not going to hurt the surface. They’ll have to shut down for a small period of time to do the finishing on it and landscaping,” Tynan said.

A formal grand opening for the skatepark is planned for June.
