Naramata Centre hits stride

Moving into its fourth year of operation following a two-year closure, Naramata Centre is humming along and seeing growing interest in its programs.

The centre recently launched this year’s programming schedule and says business is up about 10 per cent over last year.

“We are reconnecting with folks who used to come to us pre-closure,” said interim managing director Jim Simpson.

The centre has offered a variety of programming on its 23-acre campus for more than 70 years. Visitors travel from across Western Canada to attend the centre in the summer, while spring and fall programs prove popular with Okanagan locals.

“It's been really helpful for us to be of use to the community and engage with folks and see the centre become successful," Simpson said.

The centre announced last year it would be entering talks with developers to sell off some of its property to reach a more sustainable footing. Simpson says those conversations continue.

“Big moves like that with development, nothing happens quickly,” he said. “We still need to find the right size for this place for its operation, it's not the 23 acres that we own. But we want to do it mindfully.”

New programming this year includes Circus and Acro Discovery, which uses “circus performance and acro movement to facilitate conscious growth, health and well being.” A S.O.U.L. camp weekend retreat to help youth explore leadership is also being offered, as well as a Sacred Space Retreat Day — a once-a-month single day retreat for creative expression, silent contemplation and guided time together.

More information on this year’s schedule can be found online.
