Nat'l park consult extended

UPDATE: 6:45 p.m.

Parks Canada says it will extend the public consultation period on a proposed national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen by two weeks.

In a news release issued late Monday, Parks Canada says the extension will allow groups an opportunity to submit views on the proposed boundary and provide input on management of the lands.

"Parks Canada will conclude meetings with stakeholders on February 28, 2019, as originally planned. However, those who have not had an opportunity to attend a presentation by Parks Canada are encouraged to view the Agency’s presentation.

Parks Canada invites Canadians to share their views through the consultation website until March 15.

Alternatively, hard copies of the consultation survey and information package can be found at local municipalities, regional district offices, and libraries.

It appears residents of the South Okanagan will not be getting a public forum or town hall on a national park reserve proposed for the region.

The South Okanagan Similkameen Preservation Society, a group opposed to the park, had booked the Oliver Community Centre for Tuesday evening to hold a public meeting on the issue and extended an invitation to Parks Canada.

SOSPS announced Monday that Parks Canada has declined to attend, so the meeting has been cancelled.

Parks Canada has only committed to meeting with leadership of stakeholder groups related to the proposed national park, directing public feedback to a survey online.

“SOSPS will continue requests with Parks Canada to hold a public meeting regarding the proposed park,” the group said Monday, adding they are calling on Parks Canada to extend the consultation process on the issue past the looming Feb. 28 deadline.

Supporters of the park have said the sensitivity of the issue makes it a poor fit for a public meeting.

“It’s intimidating for us to put our name out there,” Doreen Olson of the South Okanagan National Park Network told Castanet last week. “To have an open forum, it doesn’t work. It's just a bunch of yelling.”

Oliver council will debate today sending a formal request to the federal government for a referendum to be held on the proposed park.
