Illness forces retirement

Laurel Burnham, longtime event organizer behind events like the S.S. Sicamous Christmas Market, Okanagan Makers Craft Show and much more has announced her retirement due to a potentially terminal illness.

Burnham wrote on the Okanagan Makers Facebook Page Friday that she will be stepping down, and that the Wonderful Women's Show & Spring Market formerly scheduled for March 30-31, and the Okanagan Makers Christmas Craft Fair & Sustainable Living Show formerly scheduled for November 2-3 have been cancelled.

"It is time to turn my attention to healing and my home, the birth of my first grandchild in August, balanced with navigating a recurrent illness that is in all likelihood terminal," Burnham wrote.

She has been organizing community events and markets focused on local businesses for 30 years.

"It has been my great honour and privilege to organize events and markets, to facilitate the enormous diversity of hard work, creativity, resourcefulness, and ingenuity, and to highlight all aspects of makers and doers. It has been a colourful 30 years fostering micro-business in the South Okanagan," she wrote.

Anyone who has purchased tickets for either of the cancelled events will be refunded by the end of March.
