Mamma Mia, what a show!

Relive the soundtrack of the 70s with "Mamma Mia!", Princess Margaret Secondary's musical theatre show taking place at the Cleland Theatre in Penticton this coming week.

The show features the music of ABBA, including the iconic title song. Director Lori Grant said the rights to the musical, which has seen years of success on Broadway and a Hollywood adaptation, only recently became available for schools, and she jumped right on it.

"Somewhere in your life, those songs are showing up," Grant said. "They're just as popular today as they were when they came out in the 70s. It's just fun to be able to pay an homage to that."

The comedic show follows a young woman trying to figure out which of three potential men is her birth father, using hit ABBA songs to tell the story.

Audiences can expect a powerhouse show from what Grant calls her “dream cast” of students.

"I'm just so happy that it landed on a time that I've got this great group of seniors, I've got seven that are graduating that have been through the shows for four years," she said.

One of those students is Jessica Singleton, who will be graduating in the spring and leaving town to study music at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton.

She is playing Sophie, a lead role, and said her final experience in a high school show has been emotional and rewarding.

"It's kind of indescribable in some ways because it's so personal and so much fun, you spend so much time together," Singleton said. "I love rehearsing."

The show opens Jan. 31, and runs for two weekends. Shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m., with a special closing performance on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at which singing along to the tunes is encouraged.

Tickets range depending on age group up to $15, and can be purchased at Princess Margaret Secondary, the Penticton ReStore and the Community Centre near the pool entrance.
