Tiger Alley closing doors

Chelsea Powrie

Weird, unusual, eclectic — these are all words the owner of Tiger Alley on Main Street in Penticton would take as compliments.

Time is running out to check out the colourful shop though, since its doors will be closing Jan. 18.

Owner Jordan Keij said she often gets asked to describe the store but can only say the stock is a little bit of everything, offering everything from wild vintage clothes, furniture and decorations to creative custom t-shirts, to taxidermy. Three stuffed pheasant-type birds are currently displayed and up for sale, and they're far from the oddest thing you'll find at Tiger Alley.

"The more eclectic the better. The original intent was kinda the whole rock and roll circus vibe in here, so I look for stuff that's fun and easy to put on and interesting, and it will draw people in," Keij said.

The shop is offering a variety of sales on merchandise leading up to the closure, but Tiger Alley won't be disappearing. They are simply moving, to an online-based store featuring custom clothes and household goods and a planned Kelowna storefront, though a spot hasn't been picked yet.

That's not to say Keij won't miss the Main Street shop.

"It's definitely been a fun and interesting experience downtown, because it is the kind of store that brings in all the different personalities, so you do meet a lot of different people and hear their stories and where they come from," Keij said. "So I will miss that about being here."

And Keij's dog Edith, the unofficial store mascot who customers have come to expect when they walk through the door, will of course be going wherever Keij does.

Keij said she will miss having a storefront that celebrates everything weird and wonderful, and had something for everyone that walked through the doors.

"I think it was really comfortable for anybody," Keij said. "It was just a really easy environment that was accessible to anybody."

For now, keep an eye out online for how to order and news.
