Arrest warrant for witness

A key Crown witness in the trial of a man accused of an alleged armed kidnapping in Princeton in 2017 failed to show up to court on Monday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 9, resulting in the judge issuing an arrest warrant.

Jodie Walker was allegedly kidnapped by infamous South Okanagan prisoner Afshin Ighani in April 2017. The 22-year-old witness expressed fear of the accused during a police interview immediately after the incident, but claimed to not remember anything about the day once she took the stand at trial.

The other Crown witness and alleged victim in the case has fled the country and is unable to testify. The trial came to a sudden stop after it was revealed Walker was communicating with Ighani while he was behind bars.

Walker had been ordered to appear Monday morning. When she failed to show, her material witness warrant was adjourned until Wednesday at 10 a.m., but after two attempts at that time to page her to the courtroom, the judge ordered a warrant be issued to ensure her presence when the trial resumes Jan. 28.

Ighani, 46, is also facing charges for the alleged stabbing of two inmates at Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver in Sept. 2017 and the assault of a female guard in 2018, the trials for which are due to start the same day as the kidnapping trial resumes, Jan. 28.
