'Do not consume' lifted

Tap water in the tiny Similkameen community of Hedley has been deemed mostly safe once again.

The town had been under a “do not consume” notice since Dec. 7 due to elevated coliform levels and heavy metals in the drinking water.

That meant residents were not able to use the water for cooking, drinking or any consumption even if boiled first.

On Monday Interior Health downgraded the notice to a water quality advisory, the lowest level of alert and below a boil water notice. Some risk remains for those with compromised immune systems.

The advisory impacts the Hedley Improvement District Water System, which serves well under 500 residents.
