Help critters with flood, fire

Chelsea Powrie

Flood and fire season may seem a long way off, but for Critteraid Animal Sanctuary, now is the time to prepare so they are ready to help rescue any stranded or at-risk farm animals when spring comes around.

The sanctuary is using the winter to make some preparatory changes to their pasture area, including sectioning off a special field just for any animals that come in during emergencies. They are also asking for help obtaining some desperately needed equipment.

"We do need the public's help to find a three-stall horse trailer to have on property," said animal director Jess Byer. "We are wanting one in workable condition, but are absolutely happy if anyone has anything they are willing to give us at less than cost."

They are also looking for pig boards, which help direct pigs when they are being moved, and a cattle chute.

All of this will help ensure Critteraid can safely move any animals in need if disaster were to strike.

"We love to supply the community that helps us, during unfortunate seasons like the fires and floods," Byer said. "They happen quick, and we want to be ready."

She said the farm will be "a little safe place" during emergencies.

Anyone with a lead on where to obtain these items cheaply or for free, or who wishes to donate to the cause of obtaining them, can contact Jess Byer at 250-488-3226 or donate online here
