Indoor blacklight mini golf

Chelsea Powrie

There's a new entertainment option in Penticton this fall, with the opening of a blacklight mini golf course inside the Roll N Stones Fun Centre.

Owners Darren Hafftor and Melissa Kolbe opened up the mini golf area two weeks ago, after having sensed a need for that kind of family-friendly entertainment.

"We found that in Penticton, it's obviously a small town, with not a lot of things to do in the winter. Hockey games are great, but they're not every day," Kolbe said. "So we wanted to make a place where people could come with their families, kids to grandparents, and just have a really good time."

The nine-hole fantasy-themed course is lit by blacklights, with all the walls and course obstacles decorated with special paint to glow in the light.

"We hired a company out of Edmonton to do the whole course, and they sent a painter from Boston to come and do all the artwork. And he was fantastic, way more than we ever expected for him to do," Kolbe. "He basically did all the artwork he would do for an 18-hole course, fit into a nine-hole course."

So far, the response from visitors has been very positive.

"Everyone's saying it's just really phenomenal, and there's nothing around this area like it," Hafftor said. "And that's what we saw, that there was nothing there."

A round of golf costs $9 for a child and $11 for an adult, with any additional rounds half-price, as long as you don't leave the building. The centre offers bowling, food and an arcade as well as mini golf, so Hafftor and Kolbe's hope is that people will make a day out of enjoying all they have to offer.

The fantasy theme is something they are particularly happy with.

"Anything you can imagine from dragons to wizards, pegasus is in there, mystical type stuff, I just think it's really great and it appeals to all ages," Kolbe said.

The mini golf course and the rest of the Roll N Stones activities are open seven days a week.
