47 townhomes proposed

Osoyoos town council got their first look  Monday at a 47-unit townhouse development proposed for the north entrance to the community.

The plan at 9110 and 9120 Main Street — land previously zoned for a mixed use medical-commercial building and three residential buildings — will see 14 of the 47 homes built with basement suites in an attempt to alleviate the local rental crunch.

Access to the development will come off Vedette Drive, which will require a full reconstruction to be shared by the Town and developer. A public easement will also be secured for a future pedestrian trail planned around Peanut Pond.

“I really like this proposal, almost everything about it makes sense,” said Coun. CJ Rhodes.

He, however, voiced concern that residents would try to cut time off their commute by driving directly to Main Street through the Lakeview Plaza parking lot.

Director of planning Gina MacKay said they will be approaching the owners of the Lakeview Plaza about creating a more formal road around the parking area, if the development is approved.

Council gave the proposal first and second reading. The development will go up for public hearing December 17 at 4:00 p.m. at town hall.
