Seniors seek liquor licence

The Penticton Seniors' Drop-In Centre has put a request in to city council for a liquor-primary permit, specifically for use during their social dinners and dances.

The centre has previously served alcohol using a special event permit on specific occasions, but is now requesting the freedom that would come from a liquor-primary designation to serve during more events, within the hours of 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Consideration of a liquor-primary license takes into account the location of the establishment, capacity and hours of service, impact of noise on other local residents, impact on the community and the views of residents.

According to a letter of intent sent by the seniors' centre, the license would be used to augment existing services and activities, and won't negatively affect the community.

"The potential for noise has never been a factor in our operation," reads the letter. "In the operation of the centre over the last 19 years of operation, there has never been an incident causing a disturbance with nearby residents and any potential of disturbance would not be tolerated."

Council has the option to pass the bid on to the public notification stage, during which time informational signs will be posted regarding the liquor license application on site and in local newspapers, as well as a consultation of neighbours. They could also choose to direct the bid back to city staff for further inquiry, or deny it entirely.

Penticton city council will meet on Nov. 20 to determine this matter.
