Help for expectant mothers

The South Okanagan Similkameen Division of Family Practice has launched a new web tool to connect expectant mothers in Penticton and the surrounding area with the right type of maternity care.

The new website, Maternity Services in the South Okanagan Similkameen, lists maternity care clinics, providers and support workers like midwives, family physicians who deliver, obstetricians, doulas, public health nurses and perinatal social workers.

Information is also provided on the type of care each provides, and how to access them.

“Having all this information in one location can help expectant mothers make the care choice that is right for them,” says Dr. Catherine Botting, noting that the website includes information for expectant mothers in communities such as Peachland and Princeton who will deliver in Penticton.

The website allows mothers to learn about developments in maternity care in the area, such as the recently opened South Okanagan Maternity Centre, where expectant mothers can receive interdisciplinary care from a team of family physicians and midwife.

“We’re happy that with this new website, more people will know about all the care options available to them, such as the variety of caregivers that offer home visits, allowing parents to stay in the comfort of home as the baby’s feeding, weight and general health is checked,” said midwife, Susie Lobb.

The website is a part of a larger effort by the SOS Division of Family Practice to develop a community approach to maternity care in the region.
