ORIGINAL 8:40 a.m.
Manslaughter charges have been approved against a Penticton man for a daytime shooting at a local apartment complex in 2017.
Sylvain Demers is charged with one count of manslaughter with a firearm for the homicide April 26, 2017 that left 52-year-old Randall Toews dead, according to court records.
Witnesses at the time told Castanet they heard loud banging and yelling, “I know you're in here,” prior to a gunshot. Toews stumbled down the steps and died in the parking lot of the building.
Police initially announced they had arrested a suspect, but released him without charge the following day.
Both the victim and the alleged shooter have lengthy criminal records. Demers remains in jail pending a scheduled bail hearing later today.
Castanet has reached out to the RCMP for more information.
