The cuddliest job ever

Chelsea Powrie

It's hard to imagine a more adorable job title than "kitten nanny."

That's exactly what Critteraid animal sanctuary in Summerland desperately needs right now, for their four newest kittens and some older kittens who were born in tough circumstances and need cuddles from friendly humans to help them socialize.

"Kitty nannies, basically the job description would be that you come in on your own time when you can, and we would make it quiet, we would teach you and mentor you on how to touch and play with them," said Jess Byer, animal director at Critteraid.

"Honestly, reading stories to them would be a huge asset to help them bond and learn that humans aren't scary and bad, and we couldn't do that without the volunteer power."

The four newest arrivals are just a few months old, rescued from a home in Peachland.

"These guys were quite urgent," Byer said. "It's getting quite cold outside. They were living in a house that is now abandoned. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find Mom."

The kittens are skittish and haven't learned to trust humans. Some of the older kittens at Critteraid need similar help, having been born outside or in neglectful circumstances.

All of the kittens will eventually be available for adoption, fully spayed and neutered.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to be a kitten nanny can contact Jess Byer at 250-488-3226 for more information.
