Vagrancy affecting banks

Prospera Credit Union in downtown Penticton has scaled back the hours its ATM is available due to vagrancy issues in the area.

The bank's head office posted on Twitter Thursday saying the ATM at its Penticton location, in the 400 block of Main Street, will only be available during business hours, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The ATM vestibule was previously open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Branch manager Colton Cheney declined to comment on specifics, but said there have been issues particularly over the past month.

"For the safety of our members and our staff members we've decided to make the decision for the time being."

Cheney said the decision is following suit with many other banks in Penticton, the Okanagan and B.C. that only keep their ATM open during business hours.

"It is a problem everywhere, it's not just us," he said.
