9,000 pounds of food

An annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in Penticton and the surrounding area has been a big success, with roughly 9,000 pounds of food donated.

"Donations per household were exceptionally generous this year, with many homes giving multiple bags and cases of high quality, nutrient-rich foods," said organizer Dan Kane.

Volunteers distributed donation bags to homes and businesses around Penticton, Summerland and Okanagan Falls during the second week of September, returning to collect them filled with any donations.

Penticton residents donated over 7,000 pounds, Summerland donated 1,450 pounds and Okanagan Falls well over 400 pounds.

"Even more noteworthy than the amount of food collected was the number of food bank recipients who volunteered to help in this year’s drive. Far more volunteered this year than previously," said Kane.

Over 125 volunteers delivered 15,000 flyer-bags to small routes in urban Penticton and Summerland during the week of Sept 10-14. On Saturday, the 15th, they retraced their routes and picked up thousands of shopping bags stuffed with food.

The food will go to local branches of charities like the Salvation Army. The fundraiser is annual, and those wishing to get involved next year can call Kane at 250-328-8151.
