Nearly steps on rattlesnake

A man walking back to his car from Peach Fest celebrations met an unexpected stranger on Martin Street Saturday night.

Douglas Drouin said he's seen plenty of wild animals in the downtown Penticton area, but never a rattlesnake.

"I almost stepped on it," he wrote in a message to Castanet, after a post in the Penticton Facebook group. "Now I have been in and around Penticton for almost 34 years and have seen bears. Cougars. Skunks. Porcupines. Moose. Elk. Deer. Coyotes and more in the city, but this is the first time I've ever seen a rattlesnake downtown."

Drouin continued home with his family after encountering the snake slithering down Martin, then returned to the area alone 10 minutes later. He grabbed an empty ice cream pail from Ogo's Ice Cream, and with the help of a friend and what he called a "very absurdly long stick," he placed the snake into the tub.

"I put it in the bucket. Sealed it, poked a hole in the top put it in my car and dropped it off behind Campbell Mountain," he said.

In his post on Facebook, Drouin urged Penticton residents to be aware of our wild neighbours.

"We do live in an environment where run ins with animals are not only normal but common place. Always stay aware and stay safe."
