Honoured with Order of BC

A former Summerland resident and contributor to many notable Penticton building projects has been appointed to the Order of British Columbia for her work on sustainability in the building industry.

Brenda Martens has been given the honour due to her extensive work on sustainable building projects around the province, as well as the "extraordinary lengths" she has gone to in her own life to reduce her environmental footprint, according to the advisory council.

She once chose to take a train across North American and a freighter ship across the Atlantic for an engagement in Italy, to avoid the carbon footprint associated with air travel.

The Order is the highest recognition the Province can bestow on a citizen, reserved for "those persons who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the province or elsewhere."

Martens' work on the Olympic Athletes' Villages and BC Housing residences province-wide made her an ideal candidate. Local projects that she was involved in include the Penticton Aquatic Centre renovation and the Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation at Okanagan College.

She has also previously been honoured with the Volunteer Leadership Award from the Canada Green Building Council in 2013, and was named a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design fellow in 2012, one of only 10 Canadians of 226 individuals worldwide.
