UPDATE 5:35 p.m.

The Penticton Indian Band has issued an evacuation alert for 13 addresses near the Conkle Mountain wildfire, west of Summerland.

All homes on Shingle Creek Road, north of Green Mountain Road and all residents on Big Valley Road have been asked to prepare to leave on short notice.

The First Nation says the blaze is within 5.5 kilometres of homes, which could become a problem if the winds increase and change direction. A community-wide local state of emergency has also been declared.

UPDATE: 2:30 p.m

BC Wildfire has officially made the Conkle Mountain wildfire a "fire of note."

They say it is estimated at 50 hectares, and 42 personnel, 3 helicopters, heavy equipment and air tankers are on the scene to help suppress it.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m.

The Penticton Indian Band says the Conkle Mountain wildfire has “sparked again” due to high heat and wind.

“The PIB fire department, water bombers and suppression crews are on site,” the First Nation said in a Facebook post. “So far the fire is being controlled as much as possible.”

The PIB initially said Wednesday morning the fire — which is burning on its reserve — was “mostly contained.” Air support has been attacking the fire steadily all day. The BC Wildfire Service has still not commented on the fire.

UPDATE 11:40 a.m.

The District of Summerland says the fire burning west of Conkle Mountain is between 50 and 70 hectares in size and is being attacked by multiple fixed-wing air tankers.

The fire still does not pose a risk to the municipality, but the situation is being monitored closely.

“Today's forecast calls for increasing winds this afternoon which could cause a further challenge for those fighting the fire,” the District said in a Facebook post.

The fire is burning on Penticton Indian Band territory, and the First Nation said Wednesday morning the fire was “mostly contained.” The B.C. Wildfire Service still has not commented on the situation.

ORIGINAL 8 a.m.

The Penticton Indian Band says the wildfire sparked on its reserve near Conkle Mountain Tuesday evening was mostly contained by 10 p.m.

“There is a low glow of smoking embers that will be monitored today but no open flame,” the First Nation’s natural resources department said Wednesday morning. “Available information indicates that no people, animals or structures were harmed.”

The fire was the most visible of 13 wildfires sparked in the Okanagan-Similkameen by a heavy lightning storm. Crews also managed to stop a blaze caused by lightning in Naramata that nearly destroyed a home. A second wildfire continues to burn above the KVR trail there, but is in the hands of the BC Wildfire Service.
