Chief says: Stay fire safe

Penticton fire chief Larry Watkinson is hoping residents will reacquaint themselves with strategies for fire safety and preparedness now that wildfire season has arrived.

“Once started, wildfires become unpredictable and can spread quickly," Watkinson said. "The key to ensuring the safety of your property and family starts with the three ‘Ps’ of preparing, planning and practicing."

He encourages residents to prepare a FireSmart home, evacuation route, family communications plan and to put together a 72-hour emergency supply kit for each individual in a family, which should include batteries, food and important medications.

Watkinson also points to social media accounts like @cityofpenticton and @pentictonfire as good resources to monitor for updates in the event of a fire. Residents should also have plans for protecting their home.

Finally, he suggests practicing how to leave, including preparation steps, going over escape routes and potential backup plans in case of being trapped.

The City of Penticton has put together an informational video featuring Watkinson explaining wildfire preparedness, which can be viewed here
