New safety lights downtown

Downtown is a brighter place at night now, as part of an ongoing push to make the Main Street area of Penticton a safer place to be.

Various new lights have been installed in strategic areas by a working group made up of the Downtown Penticton Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the city which is rolling out several security and safety solutions.

“The installation of additional and brighter lights is a proven method of bringing order to areas where, under poor lighting conditions, issues leading to nuisance behaviour, illegal activities and crime can take root”, said bylaw supervisor, Tina Siebert, in a city press release

The city outlined benefits to targeted lighting such as encouraging a feeling of safety within those areas, and discouraging "antisocial behaviour."

The new installations include:

  • 10 cobra head lights installed in the 200 and 300 blocks of the east and west lanes of Main Street
  • Two dusk-to-dawn lights behind 363 and 224 Main Street
  • 40 poles located in the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Main Street wrapped with LED rope lighting
  • Upgraded light globes located at Nanaimo and Main Street
